November 06, 2005 By: Fran Christie Teak Outdoor Garden FurnitureWith teak outdoor garden furniture becoming more popular each day, it becomes evident that teakwood is extremely durable, light and convenient, and it ages with exceptional grace.
One of the reasons that teak is becoming one of the more popular woods today with designers of teak patio furniture is because of its value. Teak wood grows in severe climatic conditions in Burma and Indonesia, Africa. Teak is known a very hard wood, resistant to wind, pests, sun, and humidity. Like most other woods, teak does not splinter. For centuries, teak was used in shipbuilding, which means that teak patio furniture can easily withstand harsh climate conditions outdoors. It is also very sturdy and wind resistant giving it an advantage of aluminum and wrought iron which could rust.
Even though teak wood does not splinter, it may develop small cracks with time. With a high amount of natural wood oils, teak not develop deep structural cracks. There is no need to treat teak wood with any kind of wood sprays or oils to protect it; however, the teak wood oil does create a satiny finish. Apply teak wood oil when you plan to leave the teak furniture outside for a long period of time, or when the wood starts to show gray.
