Do-It-Yourself-Patios Are Easier Than You Think

Do-it–yourself patios mean something different to everyone. To one person it may mean simply the laying out of a brick or flagstone surface. While to another a do-it-yourself-patio may include the ground surface and an enclosed structure for year round use.

A patio is defined as an area that is usually paved, bricked, or covered with some other masonry material that is adjoining a home or building. It is not elevated above the surface of the ground in any manner. It is generally not covered unlike a porch, which has a covering. A sundeck is any porch, covered or uncovered that resembles the deck on a ship.

Online sites can give you all the information you need to set your plans in motion whether it is a patio you can install yourself or a deck or porch.

Let’s take a look at ground covers. Flagstone is a popular choice as it is stratified stone that splits into pieces suitable as paving stones. It makes a great looking surface if a bit uneven. Granite or porphyry stones come in over 20 colors and have finishes like honey chiseled, flamed and brush hammered. They can be fabricated to suit your patio’s specifications.

Cobble stones are still available, but are less appealing because of their rounded top surface. Curbstone is used to define the edges of an area and is great along driveways or where you would like to channel water. Bricks are a great choice for the home handy man. These can be laid in creative patterns for an effective patio surface. Beginners might want to restrict themselves to a linear pattern, as they are easier to lay than a circular or serpentine pattern.

There are also easy to assemble do it yourself patio kits for simple structures to protect your patio from the wind and weather.
