Deck Patio Ideas - Unlimited Resources at Your Fingertips |
|
February 20, 2005 By: Fran Christie Deck Patio Ideas - Unlimited Resources at Your FingertipsLet us imagine starting from scratch. You already know you want a deck and not a patio or pergola. You need to define your basic criteria. Do you want an intimate and cozy hideaway? Will you be looking for patio ideas for your deck with space for your children to play nearby or are you looking to create the ultimate entertainment area for a summer of weekend get-togethers. Planning for a new deck must include a visit with your local planning department to get the appropriate permits and the specifications for stairs, railings etc so you won’t hit a road block at a later date. As with buying a home the top three things to consider should be location, location, and location. A southern exposure will require some thought as in how to keep it useful when the sun is out in full. A northern exposure will require the opposite solution as in how to keep warm during the cooler weather. Deck plans that put you right in the line of sight from a neighbor will require some sort of screening whether it be man made or grown. What about size? Did you realize that since lumber comes in two-foot increments it is logical to make your deck follow this rule. So 8, 10, and 12-foot decks are more common. Add built in seating, a water source or water fountain, a sound system or subdued lighting or add storage for your deck furniture and kids toys you’ll be set for a summer experience.
